Weekly market news - 2010 - week 1
Keywords : Avocado / Fresh / France

The market is quite sluggish for this first week of the new year. Availabilities have been larger than week 53 and have remained significantly above the average for both Hass and Green (volumes from Mexico now limited and Spanish deliveries light due to holyday/rainfalls, but arrivals from Israel and Chile large). However, demand has remained as low as week 53. In this context, some traders have dropped down the Hass prices (especially for small fruits) and have cleared the stocks available (excepted for the smallest sizes like 24 and smaller). The prices range has remained very wide for Mexico (quality flexible for some brands). Prices have resisted better regarding green fruits (excepted for the last Israeli Ettinger), but the market balance has weakened, especially for small fruits

Pressure has increased further on both the green and the Hass market. Hass supply has remained significantly above the average (Israel, Mexico and Spain still below the average but Chilean volumes still large in spite of a punctual decrease). Demand has remained poor for the third week in a row. Prices have slightly decreased for small fruits. Some quality problems reported on some Chilean/Mexican brands. The green market has also been a bit more difficult. Arrivals have been lower (less volumes from Israel), but some stocks were available (partly due to the logistical problems in the UK). Prices have been more flexible for Pinkerton. More significant decrease for Fuerte (prices from 4 to 5). Some very first Peruvian fruits have been delivered (prices from 5 to 6 for grade 14 to 18)

Demand has continued to be slow and pressure has remained quite strong on the small size fruit market. Hass supply has continued to be significantly above the average (Israeli/Mexico volumes stable and moderate but arrivals still large) and sometimes of flexible quality for Mexico and Chile (some “black cold” problems reported. In this context, the January seasonal price increase has still not taken place. Green deliveries have been much lower, as Israeli arrivals have decreased significantly. The market has remained balanced for big fruits (grade 18 and bigger), but under heavy pressure for the small ones (especially Fuerte). Additional volumes from Peru have remained limited, especially in France. Prices have been a little firmer for big fruits but have continued to be very flexible for the small sizes.

Demand has remained very low this week. However, the market has remained quite stable for both Hass and green thanks to the low arrivals received. Hass arrivals have begun to tend down significantly. Arrivals from Israel and especially Mexico have remained moderate and the Chilean ones have decreased sharply. Prices have begun to increase slightly for small fruits. Volumes of green fruits have also remained moderate. Peruvian Fuerte arrivals have remained very limited, and the Israeli ones have remained significantly below the average (rainfalls last week). In this context, prices have also been slightly firmer.

The market has remained very sluggish, in spite of a quite moderate offer. Hass volumes have continued to be slightly above the average (delay of one Israeli boat, moderate volumes from Mexico and Spain but arrivals from Chile still large). However, the green ones have remained short (Peruvian volumes increasing, but Spanish shortage and delay of one Israeli boat). However, prices have not changed significantly and have even been less firm for green. Demand has remained desperately slow (avocado apart from the Chinese new year promotions for exotic fruits, effect of the come back of cold weather on avocado consumption). An increasing percentage of Chilean/Mexican Hass is showing some quality weaknesses

The market has remained quite sluggish, especially for medium/small green fruits. Green arrivals have developed further (Spanish volumes very low due to rainfalls, but full season rhythm for Peruvian Fuerte from this week and heavy volumes from Israel). Demand has remained slow, especially for Peruvian Fuerte that still had great difficulties to break into the market (competition of the Israeli Pinkerton). Prices have decreased significantly for grades 16 to 22 (better resistance of grades 12/14, sold around 5.30/5.50 in Northern Europe). The Hass market has not changed significantly. Deliveries have remained significantly above the average (very low arrivals from Spain, volumes from Chile still heavy, development of the Israeli season and increasing volumes from Mexico). Quality still flexible for part of the Mexico/Chile offer. Prices have remained stable. Some lines shifting from Chile/Mexico to Israel/Spain

The market has remained calm as demand for both Green and Hass hasn't evolved. Green arrivals have continued to develop (still low volumes from Spain due to rainfalls, and lighter deliveries from Israel but full rhythm Peruvian Fuerte season). Hence, price levels for Peruvian Fuerte have continued to decrease as some operations had to take place in order to clear some flexible quality stocks. Israeli Fuerte and Pinkerton have, however, managed to keep more interesting price levels. On the Hass side, supply has remained heavy with a punctual increase in Mexican volumes and stable and above the average Chilean deliveries but lower Israeli supply and still limited Spanish volumes. Demand for this variety has remained sluggish and a price increase couldn't take place specially for the big grades

The market has remained quite disappointing. Arrivals have tended down further and are now back to the average for both Hass and green after weeks of heavy supply. On the Hass side, Chilean volumes have remained large and the Israeli ones have developed further, but deliveries from Spain/Mexico have continued to be moderate (first Peruvian Hass). On the Green side, Israeli volumes have decreased further (Pinkerton season close to the end) and the Peruvian Fuerte ones have remained moderate. However, prices have not recovered significantly. Demand has continued to be quite low. Furthermore, part of the fruits have to be sold quickly (greatest part of the Mexican/Chilean Hass and some old stocks of Peruvian Fuerte). Israeli/Spanish Hass Prices only have slightly strengthen thanks to the switch of some South American avos lines
