Growth is continuing on the French bean market. European Union imports increased by 23% from 2005 to 2008, rising from over 160 000 tonnes to more than 197 000 tonnes. During this period, exports from Morocco and Kenya increased by 35% and 25% respectively. In contrast, Egyptian and Senegalese exports have dipped by 21% and 20%. The greatest growth has been in exports from Burkina Faso, with the volumes increasing from 514 tonnes to more than 1 100 tonnes, that is to say 120%. Only Morocco, Egypt and Kenya can ship beans almost all the year round. The other sources are only present on the market during the counter-season period. Unfortunately, the last season did not avoid the faults of the preceding ones, especially as regards supply. The counter-season sales period is still set and regulated by shipments from Senegal, an interesting supplier during this period as regards supply, quality and cost. However, problems of uneven supply and quality strongly affected the image of the source on markets as varied as those of Italy, Belgium and even France. The other sub-Saharan sources did not do any better. Relying on air freight alone, they ran into the problem of the availability of flights. In addition, the batches reached the markets at the wrong moment, that is to say after a sales period or in too large quantities and this affected prices. The sources competing with Senegal in counter-season French beans are increasingly Supplying niche markets, with the exception of Morocco and sometimes Egypt as these are the only alternative for large volumes of French beans during this period. Thanks to support from numerous projects and programmes (PPEA, PDMAS — see box), french bean sector operators in Senegal have succeeded in adapting in order to ensure not only the survival but also the development of their sector. The out-of-season french bean season that has just ended shows once again that Senegal is an important African producer country.
