Banana in Europe: 2009 price review - What a pity! ; Loeillet D.
Rubric : The latest on - FruiTrop - n° 174 - 2010 January - p.18-27
Keywords : Banana / Fresh / World

A traditional greeting at the Chinese New Year is 'Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year!'. It is a pity that this only came true in the first half of 2009 and not for the entire year. Import prices had nevertheless moved very well everywhere in the world while retail prices remained very sensible, making banana the anti-slump fruit par excellence. The recovery of world export potential throughout the second half of the year and stronger competition from competing fruits spoiled the part. Finally, the average annual price was identical to those of the two previous years.

The revitalisation of the European market is late in making itself felt. In Northern Europe, some renewed interest in the product and slight strengthening prices have been perceptible, especially in Germany. In Eastern Europe, after some very difficult weeks due to the festivities, the market seems to have started to improve, although prices have maintained a very low level. However, in other European markets the situation has remained more difficult. In France, the market has swollen due to high volumes and slow demand affected by the cold. Similarly, the effects of the cold have been even more marked in the United Kingdom, where economic activity has been practically paralysed by the snow. In Southern Europe, the Twelfth Night public holidays and continuing school holidays have contributed to slowing even further an already flat demand. Prices in Spain and Italy have dropped further. The cold, which may last into next week, could continue to pose problems by adversely affecting demand, but also by creating transfers of volumes from inaccessible markets to other European markets

The cold has continued to weigh down on most European markets, both in terms of demand and logistics, with the weakening trend even extending to the North European markets. In Germany, sales have started to show signs of weakening in regions worst affected by the cold. In France, volumes have remained moderate, but demand is still slow. However, stocks have remained relatively contained in these markets, thanks to the recovery of export flows to Eastern Europe. The situation in Southern Europe has continued to be very difficult. The market has worsened in Spain due to a rise in volumes coupled with a slowdown in demand due to snowfall. The situation has also continued to be difficult in Italy, though it has been spared the cold, due to demand remaining very slow and increasing pressure from imports. The market has remained very difficult in Russia, with demand not seeming to pick up despite the end of the Orthodox holidays

The Northern European markets seem to be rebalancing. On the one hand, supply levels from the French West Indies and Africa have been higher. However, shipments from dollar sources have been more moderate (light loads from Costa Rica due to the rains in weeks 1 and 2), and there has been better distribution of trade-offs with the British market returning to normal. But above all, demand seems to have started to pick up, especially thanks to the end of the cold snap. Might the bases for seasonal price rises finally be in place? Conversely, the Southern European markets have remained pressurised due to slow demand and high imports, both in Italy and Spain. The situation in Russia, hitherto catastrophic, seems to be improving thanks to more moderate import levels. In Eastern Europe, the markets have remained satisfactory although some weaknesses have appeared with the rise in volumes (direct shipments, and still a sizeable supply from Western Europe), and with demand disrupted by the cold.

The balance of the North European markets seems to be strengthening. The improving demand trend has continued in Germany and France, and extended to the United Kingdom. Hence, thanks to growing demand while imports from dollar sources have remained moderate, prices have been revised upward in Germany and the United Kingdom. In France, despite higher import levels and export demand slowing down, the dynamism of local demand has helped strengthen prices. However, the situation on the Southern markets has continued to be very difficult. Demand has remained flat in the face of increasing supply levels in both Italy and Spain. In Eastern Europe, the situation has significantly deteriorated due to the very low temperatures, which have adversely affected demand and disrupted logistics. In Russia, due to a slight rise in imports and the very cold temperatures there too, the market has weakened.

The return of the cold has had a negative impact on all European markets. Hence the seasonal price rise trend has undergone a hiatus in Northern Europe and France. However, while sales have slowed down, they have remained at a sufficient level to maintain market balance. In Eastern Europe, the situation has been much more difficult due to logistics disruption by heavy snowfall. In Southern Europe, where the situation was already difficult, the cold has also affected demand. Hence in Italy the market has remained unchanged, while in Spain the situation has worsened in the face of supply levels remaining very high. The only exception has been the Russian market, where the seasonal price rise has continued.

The communitarian market balance seems to have strengthen after last's week short break. Supply has remained of an average level for all the origins. At the same time, the cold weather and the beginning of school holidays (carnival) don't seem to have affected commercial activity. Demand has kept a rather good level in France and in Germany, where the market balance has strengthen. In this context, the price rise trend has restarted on these markets but prices have remained below the seasonal average (Aldi price 11% below the average). In Italy, the situation has still remained difficult due to the lack of demand, but operators have managed to impose a price rice. Same case in Eastern Europe, where prices have increased very little and have remained of a level far below Western Europe's prices. Situation has continued to be extremely difficult in Spain with a lethargic demand and volumes still very heavy. The Russian market has been stable and satisfactory, prices have continued to increase

The market balance has continued to strengthen on the various European markets. Dollar banana imports have remained moderate. Despite weather conditions remaining unfavourable for consumption, demand in Germany has maintained a good level. In France, in spite of higher import levels from Africa and the French West Indies, the market has maintained a good balance, with local demand more responsive due to better weather conditions. Hence the price strengthening trend has continued in Northern Europe (though levels are still presently below average). Similarly, the improvement in weather conditions in Eastern Europe has helped bring back a better demand level. However, the situation in Italy and the United Kingdom has continued to be difficult, due to demand remaining very slow. In Spain, the restriction measures implemented have stabilised prices. The Russian market has continued to be satisfactory, with prices continuing their rise.

The market balance has consolidated, and the seasonal price rise has continued. For the second consecutive week, the dollar banana supply has maintained a moderate level in Northern Europe (dip from Ecuador). In this context prices have continued to strengthen in Germany, and to a lesser degree in the United Kingdom. In Eastern Europe, lower supply levels from the West have helped prices continue to strengthen. In France, import levels have been relatively higher in view of the greater volumes from Africa, but demand has maintained a good level and prices have continued to rise. The fall in dollar banana imports has helped South European market to recover a certain balance. The same goes for Spain, where restrictions on the Canary Islands bananas have finally helped the low prices to pick up. The price rise in Russia has continued.
